Sight Seeing in Menorca

Menorca enjoys a slightly milder climate than the other Balearic Islands and so its landscape is more green and lush. The natural beauty of S'Albufera des Grau coastal nature reserve is well worth visiting to explore the wetlands and scrub of this protected area as well as the ancient Talayotic and Roman ruins that are scattered throughout the reserve. Climb El Toro, the highest mountain in the Balearics standing at 358 metres tall for fantastic panoramic views across the island and beyond and then visit the Museu de la Natura to discover fascinating aspects of the island's flora and fauna. With a cheap flight to Menorca from Jet2.com you could enjoy these amazing surroundings in the Spanish sun.

The stunning scenery of Menorca is well worth visiting in itself however there are plenty of man made sights that you must see as well. The Ciutadella Cathedral is one of the largest in the world, built in the 14th century, featuring Catalan-Gothic architecture. It's owes its fortress like appearance to the Spanish civil war and features intricate stone carvings and decorations throughout including a collection of gargoyles.

The Xoriguer Gin Distillery is a must see to discover how the famous Xoriguer Gin is made. You can take a tour around the 18th century distillery and watch the whole process in action sampling the gin and other spirits as you go along, you can also buy your favourites in the distillery shop.

Menorca also has evidence of its ancient past such as Torre de'en Gaumes, the biggest prehistoric village in the Balearics and the Naveta dels Tudons, an ancient burial chamber shaped like the overturned bow of the ship. Dated at around 1500BC, it is the only construction of its kind and many myths exist surrounding its existence.

For an all round experience of Menorca's history and culture visit the Museu de Menorca where you will find an intriguing collection of Roman, Byzantine, Arabic and Talayotic articfacts as well as prehistoric items all housed in the remains of an old Fransiscan monestary.
